The Challenge - 21st and 22nd June 2013 Waveney River Centre
HMS NORFOLK F230 DUKE CLASS FRIGATE
Challengers in Model Power
THE CHALLENGE
HMS Norfolk, a Duke Class Frigate has taken me about 10 years and various updates, cost around £7000 to build. The hull is made of Marine Ply with 400 plates and bonded with £350 worth of Epoxy 5 minute glue. The onboard electronics cost £1500 and power the lights and rotating radar scanners.
Power sources are 2 x 24 volt 4000 rpm British Parvalux industrial electric motors with 2 x 12 volt x 26amp Gel batteries in series for the main power. Plus 1 x 12 volt 12amp battery that supplies power for all other electronics.
The model has a maximum speed of 10 mph and weighs just over 110 pounds and is 9 feet 3 inches long.
We shall be starting at Waveney River Centre at 12 noon on Friday 21st June, cruising down to Boaters Hill Quay near Beccles, over a route of 6.2 miles each way, for a period of 24 hours and finishing on Saturday 22nd June at noon.
This will be a unique attempt to create an independent world record on the River Waveney against tide, current and weather for distance travelled in 24 hours for a model boat.
GOOD NEWS!!!!
The team comprising of Graham Davies, Peter Dorsett, Richard Flatt, Richard Thurston, Dave Tedstone, Dave Leatherland & David Houseago completed the CHALLENGE over 24 hours and achieved an INCREDIBLE 101 miles in EXTREME weather of Heavy Rain and High Winds that chopped up the river so badly that at times we lost sight of the model in the spray.
All the team were SHATTERED!!!
I would like to say a Great Big Thank You to Oulton Broad Motor Boat Club & Broadland Coastal Cruising Club who helped us out over the weekend, plus all other people that have helped us over the last year. Thanks go to all my sponsors who have helped me. Great Thanks goes to my lovely wife who stood in Beccles shaking a bucket for money. She also put up with me over the year that I organised.
